Capitaland Chorus

CCFFmarch2016Friends and Family Night, March 2016

Bill Stauffer, Director

Capitaland Chorus was chartered in October, 1977, as the Latham Circle Chapter of Sweet Adelines International, with only 20 members. Over the years, our membership has increased from a handful of local women to a diverse group of women of all ages with varying interests, backgrounds, and occupations, who live and work in several counties in and around the Capital District. Due to this expansion, the chorus changed its name to Capitaland Chorus.

A member of Sweet Adeline's Region 15, we compete each spring and since 2014 we performed "in our own backyard" as competition was held in Albany, New York. In 2014 we won 3rd place in the small chorus category, we won most improved chorus in 2015, and most recently, won 3rd place in the mid-size category and 4th place overall in 2016. Capitaland placed in the top five in regional competition several times, capturing first place medals in 1996, 1999, 2002 and 2004.  These achievements allowed us to compete with other regional champions from all around the world at the Sweet Adelines International Competitions held in Salt Lake City in 1997, Orlando, Florida in 2000, Phoenix, Arizona in 2003 and Detroit, Michigan in 2005!

In the 2007 contest, Capitaland took highest honors in the AA category — medium size choruses.  This accomplishment allowed us to compete at the 2008 Harmony Classic, at the International Education Symposium, held in San Antonio, TX, where we placed fourth in the world.

Education is of prime importance to Sweet Adelines and Capitaland Chorus.  This goal is achieved through international-level coaches and faculty who train us in vocal production, choreography, and showmanship. Several coaching sessions are scheduled in 2014 and beyond. A weekend retreat for the Director and chorus members was one of the educational highlights of 2011 and again in 2016 for our members, and there will be another in the future as our busy schedule permits.

Throughout the year we continue to promote our craft by performing for various community events, assisting charitable groups with fundraising, singing in our Annual Show, and spreading holiday cheer via Valagrams which we offer around Valentine's Day, and Harmony-grams.  We have welcomed travelers to the airport during the holiday season and perform at company parties during the year.

As you can see, we are a very active and involved chorus in both our community and our sponsoring organization.  Come join the fun!

July/August 2017 Sweet Adeline of the Month: Laurie Pracher

Laurie is one of those "behind-the-scenes" members who works hard in the chorus: She serves on the 2017 Management Team, is a dedicated chorus member and often volunteers for singouts, even though she must travel quite a bit to participate. Laurie always strives for excellence, both in the chorus and in her quartet, and for all these things, we'd like to recognize and thank her!

May/June 2017 Sweet Adeline of the Month: Isabel Pickett

Videographer Extraordinaire, we'd like to thank Isie for her talents, and to acknowledge the tremendous amount of work that this job entails: bringing and setting up the camera each week to record our rehearsals; editing them into manageable bits; and then making sure there's a working link to be shared so every member has access to these fabulous learning tools! Coaching sessions or other extra rehearsals are also covered. Isie is also extremely active in singouts, is a helpful and active member of the Tenor community and handles elements of the chorus website as well.  Thanks very much, Isie, Capitaland is truly appreciative of your contributions!

Capitaland Chorus 2017 Woman of Note:

MEGAN SCOLARO

Capitaland Chorus is extremely fortunate to have such a talented musical leader such as Megan. Whether she is conducting physical or vocal warmups, her enthusiasm and support inspire us all to do our very best as singers. As baritone section leader, she handled her responsibilities in the same giving, friendly way. We can count on Megan to hear and comment on the accuracy of pitch and our singing, and we often rely on her suggestions and comments for improvement. Megan makes us all smile with her own lovely voice and her singing of instructions as she conducts warmups, we love to have her direct us! Thank you Megan, for being a solid musical pillar for our chorus, we've grown and improved with your help!
