Capitaland Chorus

CCFFmarch2016Friends and Family Night, March 2016

Capitaland Chorus was chartered in October, 1977, as the Latham Circle Chapter of Sweet Adelines International, with only 20 members. Over the years, our membership has increased from a handful of local women to a diverse group of women of all ages with varying interests, backgrounds, and occupations, who live and work in several counties in and around the Capital District. Due to this expansion, the chorus changed its name to Capitaland Chorus.

A member of Sweet Adeline's Region 15, we compete each spring and since 2014 we've performed "in our own backyard" as competition is held in Albany, New York. In 2014 we won 3rd place in the small chorus category. We won most improved chorus in 2015, and won 3rd place in the mid-size category and 4th place overall in 2016 and again in 2017. Most recently, Capitaland took home 5th place overall medals in 2018!
Capitaland placed in the top five in regional competition several times, capturing first place medals in 1996, 1999, 2002 and 2004.  These achievements allowed us to compete with other regional champions from all around the world at the Sweet Adelines International Competitions held in Salt Lake City in 1997, Orlando, Florida in 2000, Phoenix, Arizona in 2003 and Detroit, Michigan in 2005!

In the 2007 contest, Capitaland took highest honors in the AA category — medium size choruses.  This accomplishment allowed us to compete at the 2008 Harmony Classic, at the International Education Symposium, held in San Antonio, TX, where we placed fourth in the world.

Education is of prime importance to Sweet Adelines and Capitaland Chorus. This goal is achieved through international-level coaches and faculty who train us in vocal production, choreography, and showmanship. Coaching sessions are a normal part of our education, and several are scheduled for 2017 and beyond. A weekend retreat for the Director and chorus members was one of the educational highlights of 2011 and again in 2016 for our members, and there will be another in the future as our busy schedule permits.

Throughout the year we continue to promote our craft by performing for various community events, assisting charitable groups with fundraising, performing our national anthem at the Joe Bruno stadium, singing in our Annual Show, and spreading holiday cheer via Valagrams which we offer around Valentine's Day, and Harmony-grams. We have welcomed travelers to the airport during the holiday season and perform at company parties during the year.

As you can see, we are a very active and involved chorus in both our community and our sponsoring organization.  Come join the fun!

Meet the Chorus

Come to the About Us section to meet the director, and find out what we're all about!

August/Sept. 2018 Sweet Adeline of the Month: Heather Boyea

Our newest honoree, Heather, is also a relatively new member of Capitaland Chorus. She sings lead and has worked very hard to learn old and new music so she can be involved more fully with the chorus. Heather comes to us with all the energy and enthusiasm of a "newbie," and currently serves as Secretary on the Management Team. In addition, Heather has volunteered to help out with the chorus website, which we also really appreciate! Congratulations Heather, and we're very happy to have you as part of our chorus!

June/July 2018 Sweet Adeline of the Month: Cheryl Chalk

Any chorus who has taken part in a Director search knows the hard work and careful attention to detail that the task entails. Our heartfelt thanks to Cheryl, who, not for the first time, has headed the Director Search Committee, making sure that both the candidates and the chorus have all the information needed to make sound and informed choices. We thank you Cheryl, for once again putting the interest of the chorus foremost and guiding us along the path to a promising future!

April/May 2018 Sweet Adeline of the Month: Lisa McVey

Our honoree this month, Lisa McVey, has a never-give-up, let's-get-it-done attitude that commands much respect from the chorus. Lisa willingly tackles the jobs that need her focus and does it with confidence. She has served the chorus in many roles: as a member of the management team, quartet member, show co-chair, and director search committee. Congratulations Lisa, and many thanks for all you do!

Capitaland Chorus 2018 Woman of Note:

CAROL STEARNS

Carol has worn so many hats during her time in Capitaland Chorus that it's hard to know where to begin. She often works behind the scenes, for example, she served on the Board for many years, acted as Secretary, is an important part of the Membership Team where she acts as Membership Chair for part of the year. In addition, she is welcoming to all visitors, and most recently, arranged the installation ceremony for the 2018 Management Team. The list goes on, but we want Carol to know that she is much loved and appreciated, and congratulations on this honor!
