Capitaland Chorus

CCFFmarch2016Friends and Family Night, March 2016

Capitaland Chorus of Albany, New York is an all-women's barbershop chorus and award-winning chapter in Region 15 of Sweet Adelines International. Capitaland Chorus was chartered in October, 1977, as the Latham Circle Chorus Chapter of Sweet Adelines International, with only 20 members. Over the years, our membership has increased from a handful of local women to a diverse group of women of all ages with varying interests, backgrounds, and occupations, who live and work in several counties in and around the Capital District. Due to this expansion, the chorus changed its name to Capitaland Chorus. Currently, we have over 45 members, all of whom are dedicated to the art of four-part barbershop a cappella singing.

A member of Sweet Adeline's Region 15, we compete each spring. Since 2014, we've performed "in our own backyard" as competition is held in Albany, New York. In 2014, we placed 3rd in the small chorus category. We won most improved chorus in 2015, and won 3rd place in the mid-size category and 4th place overall in 2016 and again in 2017. In 2018 we placed 5th in overall medals in 2018. Most recently we placed 6th overall in 2019.

Capitaland placed in the top five in regional competition several times, capturing first place medals in 1996, 1999, 2002 and 2004.  These achievements allowed us to compete with other regional champions from all around the world at the Sweet Adelines International Competitions held in Salt Lake City in 1997, Orlando, Florida in 2000, Phoenix, Arizona in 2003 and Detroit, Michigan in 2005! During the 2007 contest season, Capitaland took highest honors in the AA category — medium size choruses.  This accomplishment allowed us to compete at the 2008 Harmony Classic, at the International Education Symposium, held in San Antonio, TX, where we placed fourth in the world.

Education is of prime importance to Sweet Adelines and Capitaland Chorus. This goal is achieved through international-level coaches and faculty who train us in vocal production, choreography, and showmanship. Coaching sessions are a normal part of our education, and several are scheduled for 2019-20 and beyond. A weekend retreat for the Director and chorus members was one of the educational highlights of 2011, 2016, and again in 2017 for our members, and there will be more in the future as our busy schedule permits.

Throughout the year, the entire chorus or smaller ensembles and quartets continue to promote our craft. We perform for vaious community events, assist charitable groups with fundraising, perform our National Anthem at the Joe Bruno Stadium, host and perform at our annual show, and spread cheer through Singing Valentines and Harmony Grams for all occations. In additiona, we have welcomed travelers to the airport during the holiday season and perform at company parties. As you can see, we are a very active and involved chorus in both our community and our sponsoring organization.

Come join the fun!

June 2019 Sweet Adeline of the Month: Linda Hayes

Linda continues to play a leading roles in at least two very important chorus areas: she works tirelessly to be sure we know and execute the choreography correctly, while continuing to teach us patiently and kindly. Another important area is that of costumes: Linda spends many hours researching & finding vendors that can properly outfit a chorus of ladies of various sizes and shapes; she examines materials and styles carefully; and does fittings and measurements once a costume is purchased, all in an effort to make us look our best on stage. Well Linda, we sparkle up there, and so do you! We thank you for your efforts on our behalf!

April 2019 Sweet Adeline of the Month: Joanne Bonczek

Joanne joined Capitaland after her Schenectady chorus dissolved and she immediately became a vital member of the bass section. She learns her music quickly, adds to her knowledge of "rep" songs to participate in sing outs, and is always prepared at rehearsals. For the past several years, Joanne has done a lovely job of planning and hosting chorus events such as Friend & Family nights, the annual banquet, and show and competition group events. She does everything with volunteers with no fuss or muss. She delivers and enhances all our lives. Many thanks Joanne for all your good work!

Capitaland Chorus 2019 Member of Note:

MEREDITH BUTLER

Congratulations to our 2019 Member of Note, Meredith Butler!

The chorus as a whole has many reasons to be grateful to Meredith Butler, our business manager. She is very active in the financial well-being of the chorus, setting up thousands of dollars of singouts all over the capital district! On a more one-to-one basis, Meredith is kind and helpful to her riser mates, and also has been known to help smooth the way for newbies who can turn to Meredith for information on how our chorus works, how things are done, and preparing for competition. If all that isn't enough, she also schedules and periodically leads our participation in physical warm ups. Brava Meredith, you truly embody the essence of being a Sweet Adeline!
