Competition

Competition is a major and fun part of the barbershop world that helps keep us focused on raising the bar of performing excellence. We come together in a spirit of lighthearted contest, to see who's really got top form. We root for each other, cheer each other on, and once the medals have been handed out, we sing and party into the night!

Regional

Every year in the Spring, typically in May, Capitaland Chorus competes in our regional contest. Since 2015, Region 15 has held their competition in Albany, NY (virtually "in our own backyard") and dozens of choruses and quartets come together to sing and compete. There are a number of judging categories (Sound, Music, Expression, and Showmanship), and the groups bring complete and entertaining packages. Most recently, Capitaland took home 5th place overall medals in 2018!  In 2017 and 2016, Capitaland came in 3rd in the mid-size chorus category, and won 4th place overall. Back in 2014, Capitaland Chorus earned our first medals in our new home, Region 15, taking 3rd place in the A chorus division. And in 2013, when we were still part of Region 16, Capitaland Chorus won the 3rd place medal in the A chorus division, and placed 12th overall out of a field of 26 choruses in the chorus competition. We've had a winning history, and we plan to keep those medals coming!

International

Sometime in the fall the winners of all regional contests – and a few "wildcards" – gather together at International competition. In 2014, the International Competition was held in November in the city of Baltimore. From 2015-2017, from October 5–10, the International Competition was at the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. St. Louis, MO, is the site of the 2018 contest, hope to see you there!

Click here for details about the convention, found on the Sweet Adeline's International website.

You can view the complete contest on a live webcast on the Sweet Adelines International website. This is the ultimate female barbershop competition – not to be missed!

Watch the webcast of the contest and root for your favorites from your home!  Be sure to keep an eye out for our own members who make the trip to see the contest in person.

Meet the Chorus

Come to the About Us section to meet the director, and find out what we're all about!

March 2019 Sweet Adeline of the Month: Meredith Butler

The chorus as a whole has many reasons to be grateful to Meredith Butler, our business manager. She is very active in the financial well-being of the chorus, setting up thousands of dollars of singouts all over the capital district! On a more one-to-one basis, Meredith is kind and helpful to her riser mates, and also has been known to help smooth the way for newbies who can turn to Meredith for information on how our chorus works, how things are done, and preparing for competition. If all that isn't enough, she also schedules and periodically leads our participation in physical warm ups. Brava Meredith, you truly embody the essence of being a Sweet Adeline!

February 2019 Sweet Adeline of the Month: Sherri Strichman

Audie has passed along the coveted monthly medal to Sherri, because in the short time Sherri has been with Capitaland, her sunny disposition and musical talents have been a great asset to us. She steps right in when asked to assist with physical and vocal warmups, as well as the often not-so-easy task of blowing the pitch. Sherri always has a postive and caring nature; she is certainly a valuable member of Capitaland Chorus and we thank her for contributions! Way to go Sherri!

January 2019 Sweet Adeline of the Month: Audie Reilly

With 30 years of experience as a Sweet Adeline, Audie Reilly is always ready to share her wealth of information with other members of the chorus. She is especially supportive of new members, providing assistance with both music and choreography (she's a member of the choreo team). A dedicated tenor, Audie also volunteers to take the recyclable bottles and cans donated from chorus members and brings them to recycling centers in order to earn additional chorus money from the returns, where every little bit counts! We all appreciate Audie's ready smile and gracious attitude, so thanks for what you do!

Capitaland Chorus 2018 Woman of Note:

CAROL STEARNS

Carol has worn so many hats during her time in Capitaland Chorus that it's hard to know where to begin. She often works behind the scenes, for example, she served on the Board for many years, acted as Secretary, is an important part of the Membership Team where she acts as Membership Chair for part of the year. In addition, she is welcoming to all visitors, and most recently, arranged the installation ceremony for the 2018 Management Team. The list goes on, but we want Carol to know that she is much loved and appreciated, and congratulations on this honor!
