Mad Caps Quartet

A hat for every song...

still looking for a song for every hat!

Marilyn Semerad, fondly referred to as "bisectional," started her barbershop life in 2002 as a lead, then switched to the tenor part and is currently singing tenor with the Mad Caps quartet. Marilyn is recently retired having had a long career in the scholarly publishing field, and is now a snowbird, along with her husband Mark. She's happy to have found other singers who share her sense of humor/silliness.

Fran Pinto, Formerly Stewarts' "hat lady,"  Fran recently retired and is a mother of two awesome daughters and is a proud grandmother of Emerson James and Annabella Grace.

A member of Sweet Adelines for over 30 years, and currently acting as an assistant director in Capitaland, Fran also served as a section leader, and sings bass in both Capitaland and Saratoga Soundtrack choruses! In her spare time (and nice weather), she enjoys kayaking and riding her Indian Chieftain motorcycle!

Nancy Plaat, lead, started singing barbershop as a baritone in May 1978 as part of the Latham Circle Chorus, which then became the award-winning Capitaland Chorus. She has been married to Mark since 1982 and they are the proud parents of two boys, Louis and Daniel, and proud grandparents of Adelaide, Ellanora, and Seraphina. This is Nancy's 8th quartet in her barbershop singing career. She loves to perform and hopes that our "Mad Cap" style brings joy to audiences everywhere.

Niki Fillipone loves to sing, has three grown kids, and the very best of hubbies. She is also a proud "mummo" (a moniker bestowed by one of her grandchildren) to grandaughters Scarlet, Stella, and Opal Mae. She's always been a reader and enjoys working with kids of all ages, so it seems a natural fit that she worked as a K-12 Librarian in the Hoosic Valley School District for about eighteen years. She recently retired to pursue other interests, including singing!

Meet the Chorus

Come to the About Us section to meet the director, and find out what we're all about!

June 2019 Sweet Adeline of the Month: Linda Hayes

Linda continues to play a leading roles in at least two very important chorus areas: she works tirelessly to be sure we know and execute the choreography correctly, while continuing to teach us patiently and kindly. Another important area is that of costumes: Linda spends many hours researching & finding vendors that can properly outfit a chorus of ladies of various sizes and shapes; she examines materials and styles carefully; and does fittings and measurements once a costume is purchased, all in an effort to make us look our best on stage. Well Linda, we sparkle up there, and so do you! We thank you for your efforts on our behalf!

April 2019 Sweet Adeline of the Month: Joanne Bonczek

Joanne joined Capitaland after her Schenectady chorus dissolved and she immediately became a vital member of the bass section. She learns her music quickly, adds to her knowledge of "rep" songs to participate in sing outs, and is always prepared at rehearsals. For the past several years, Joanne has done a lovely job of planning and hosting chorus events such as Friend & Family nights, the annual banquet, and show and competition group events. She does everything with volunteers with no fuss or muss. She delivers and enhances all our lives. Many thanks Joanne for all your good work!

Capitaland Chorus 2019 Member of Note:

MEREDITH BUTLER

Congratulations to our 2019 Member of Note, Meredith Butler!

The chorus as a whole has many reasons to be grateful to Meredith Butler, our business manager. She is very active in the financial well-being of the chorus, setting up thousands of dollars of singouts all over the capital district! On a more one-to-one basis, Meredith is kind and helpful to her riser mates, and also has been known to help smooth the way for newbies who can turn to Meredith for information on how our chorus works, how things are done, and preparing for competition. If all that isn't enough, she also schedules and periodically leads our participation in physical warm ups. Brava Meredith, you truly embody the essence of being a Sweet Adeline!
